Tips for Finding Healthy Pet Treats

Tips for Finding Healthy Pet Treats

Like children, pets love to snack on treats. One look from them and you can’t resist. It’s hard not to give in to them. But, like children, giving pets treats is not the best for them. Some treats have human foods in them that can cause Pet toxicity. Sometimes, they may eat too much. Here are five tips to help make sure your pets get the healthiest treats that are the best for them:

1. Balance treats and meals
Respected veterinarians recommend that pets get 90 percent of their nutrition from their actual dog food and only 10 from their treats. Look at treats that are low in calories. That will satisfy their appetite. It is also recommended that you only give a few treats halfway between each meal. That way they are getting a little snack without spoiling their actual meals.

2. Consider allergies and other health issues
One thing to consider when getting treats for your pets is to look at any health issues your pet may have. If they are allergic to wheat and grains, look at treats that are grain free. If they have joint issues, look at treats with Glucosamine. Whatever health problems your pet has, there will be treats that will be suitable to deal with them.

3. Look at the treats for multiple uses
Pets treats are not only good as a snack. They have other great uses as well. They can be used for obedience training for puppies. Some are designed as toothbrushes to help freshen your pet’s breath. You can even use treats to help a pet get over a fear. Be careful of these other uses however and use them in moderation.

4. Look for natural, high protein treats
When looking at the ingredients for your pet treats, try to find some that are natural and organic. If your pet does not have an allergy, try using whole grains, such as potato. Also try to find some high protein pet treats that have meat and fish in them. Also find treats that have natural preservatives.

5. Beware of human foods
Another thing to consider when looking at ingredients is to make sure that certain ingredients are not in the treats. Foods like chocolate and onions are not good for pets. Also try to avoid any salt in your pet treats. Also try to avoid treats with any sugars and syrups as well as artificial preservatives. Also be careful when feeding actual human foods to your pets. Try not to feed them scraps of the dining room table. You don’t know what kinds of foods from your plates can be harmful to your pets.
