The Worst foods for Diabetes
Diabetes is a broad term that groups together different diseases that deal with blood sugar levels in the body. There are two main types of diabetes known as either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Some symptoms of type 1 diabetes include increased thirst, blurred vision, and unintended weight loss. While the symptoms for type 2 diabetes may include numbness in the feet, frequent urination, and patches of dark skin.
The best thing that you can do to manage your diabetes is to become well-educated and know which foods to avoid. A diabetes diet should not include any of these following foods:
1. Trans fats
There is absolutely nothing good about trans fats. They are bad for your brain, heart, and just overall health. These industrial trans fats are made by adding hydrogen to unsaturated fatty acids to make them more stable. Creamers, spreads, margarine, peanut butter, and frozen dinners are all examples of trans fats. They have actually been outlawed in many other countries.
2. Sweetened cereals
Starting your day with a sweet bowl of cereal may sound enjoyable. However, it is one of the worst things that you can do if you suffer from diabetes. They contain a ton of sugars and virtually no protein. Even the “healthy” cereals are not a good choice. They have a lot of carbs, which can mess up your blood sugar levels. For breakfast, you should opt for a good mix of healthy carbs and protein.
3. Dried fruits
Fruit is a super healthy snack that no medical professional will tell you to avoid. Dried fruit, on the other hand, is a completely different story. If you suffer from diabetes, then you should avoid dried fruit. Since fresh fruits are mostly water, they won’t contain nearly as many of the nutrients. However, when they are dried out, all of these nutrients will be condensed and lead to you consuming more sugar and calories.
4. Sugary beverages
Sodas and other sugary beverages are not only horrible for your teeth, but they are also the worst thing for people that suffer from diabetes. It is very easy to drink multiple sugary beverages per day. These beverages are extremely high in calories, carbs, and sugar. You should even avoid tea and lemonade, as they can contain 36 grams of carbs that come solely from sugar.
5. Flavored yogurt
You might think that having yogurt is a healthy alternative for other snacks. That isn’t always the case. Plain yogurt is a great choice. Although that isn’t always what people reach for. A lot of people tend to reach for the yogurts that are flavored like orange creme, strawberry cheesecake, and so much more. These flavored yogurts may seem like a good idea but in reality, it is almost as bad as eating a dessert.
